30-Day DMV Trash Bag Take Down Challenge

  • Our goal is to create a community of 1300 $10/month donors in 30 days
  • Donate $10/month to give 1 Comfort XL Duffel Bag per month to a child in need
    • In just 12 months, we can provide more than 15,000 Comfort XL Duffel Bags, providing a bag for every kid entering Foster Care every year
    • Just Imagine, No kid entering Foster Care in the DMV will ever have to carry their belongings in a Trash Bag again

From Rob Scheer (Our Founder),

Did you know that most children in our Foster Care System have to carry around their belongings in a trash bag when they enter new homes? Unfortunately, the Foster System lacks the funding to be able to provide each child with a bag to carry their belongings when they make the transition, so they are given trash bags.

It's the exact situation from over 40 years ago when I entered Foster Care at 12 years old, carrying my belongings in a black trash bag as I entered an unfamiliar home. That trash bag made me feel like nobody wanted me- like I was unimportant and unwanted.

Growing up in The Foster Care System, I know how uncomfortable the transition and experience can be when you leave everything you know and take the little belongings you own at such a young age, into an unfamiliar home in a trash bag. When I grew older, I knew I wanted to change the narrative of our Foster Care System, which is why I founded Comfort Cases. At Comfort Cases, we believe that every child deserves to feel a sense of comfort, safety, love, hope, and dignity.  Every child deserves to pack the little belongings they own in a special bag that they can call their very own. Every child deserves the comfort of having something to call their own.

We are dedicated to making sure every child who enters The DMV Foster Care System has their very own brand new, high-quality Comfort XL Duffel Bag to carry their belongings into their new start. Over the course of the next 30 days, we're challenging our DMV community to join our cause to change the futures of children in our local Foster Care System. We're building a dedicated group of 1300 people who are willing to contribute $10 each month to make sure no child feels unwanted or unimportant by kick-starting our "30-Day DMV Trash Bag Take Down Challenge", where we're on a mission to distribute new Comfort XL Duffel Bags to local DMV Foster Care children who need our help and support.

From Bill Lynch (Our Board Member Leading the DMV Campaign),

The statistics for kids entering the Foster Care system in this country are horrifying. Children and young teens enter and leave the system in the same way- broken and disconnected from our communities, feeling overwhelmed and unwanted.  These kids don’t get to experience the same society that most of us are privileged to live and thrive in.  I realize that the problem and any solution may seem overwhelming, however,  over the last few decades of my life, I've learned that if you focus on just the "Next 1%" of a leveraged solution, you can surpass your goal in no time. The "Next 1%" of our goal to give every kid in Foster Care their very own duffel bag, is to get 1300 donors in the DMV involved in Comfort Cases in 30 days.

After running the numbers, it's significantly easier than you think to give approximately 15,000 kids in the DMV some dignity, a sense of pride, and a deep connection to their community.

When 1300 people in The DMV are willing to invest $10/month, we can provide a high-quality Comfort XL Duffel bag to over 15,000 kids, the number of kids entering the DMV Foster Care System every single year. A simple XL duffel bag can give these kids some dignity, a sense of pride, and a deep connection to their community. We can change the future of local children who are in dire need of our help. Once the DMV has been taken care of, we can replicate this campaign nation-wide.

I’ve designed the “30 Day Trash Bag Take Down” campaign with a few things in mind. I want the solution to be simple, the financial commitment to be within reach, and I want to bring our community together to help those in need. Even if you can’t afford to donate monetarily, you can still make a huge impact in this campaign by help spreading the word of our goal.

We have the ability to connect with these kids and put them on a path to change their lives. We can create a generation of confident young adults who feel connected to their community.

That will be pretty close to the opposite of what we have today.

Imagine the difference you can make in so many kids lives by providing such a simple item that brings them so much comfort and hope. An item that most of us probably take for granted. Without us, millions of young kids with endless potential are being lost and disconnected from us. We can choose to be a part of the solution in the DMV by spreading the word about what this group is doing, growing this group across the country, and ultimately connecting thousands of us to the kids in Foster Care. We can be a part of something that is much bigger than ourselves.

It starts today with just a few of us.  The first goal is simple: 1300 of us invest $10 a month and with that money, each of us will put a Comfort XL duffel bag in the hands of one DMV kid per month, providing more than 15,000 duffels over the next year, and forever eliminating the indignity of carrying their belongings in a trash bag into the next step in their lives.

An adult walking along the beach sees a child in the distance tossing something in the ocean. As he gets closer, he notices the child throwing washed-up starfish back into the ocean. Being curious, the adult asks the child, "Why are you doing that? You can't make that big of a difference and save them all! It'll take you forever and they'll just wash up on the shore again." The child replies as he throws another starfish back into the ocean, "But it matters to that one. I may not be able to save them all, but I have to try. I can change that one's life- and that matters to them."

  • 71% of the females who age out of foster care will be pregnant by age 21

  • 23,000 young people every year age out of the Foster System in the United States without permanent connections to a stable family

Together, we can change these statistics and their futures.

HOST

Rob Scheer

Rob and his Husband, Reece Scheer, are the proud fathers of five children from the foster care system who arrived at his home with trash bags. Growing up in foster care himself, he remembered feeling disposable as a child carrying a trash bag to his foster home, and he wondered how this could still be happening 30 years later. In 2013, the Scheer family set out on a mission to eliminate the use of trash bags in the foster care system and provide children entering the system with brand new essential and comfort items. Rob is currently the CEO of Comfort Cases, traveling the country to share his story and advocate for youth in foster care.

WE OWE IT TO THE VULNERABLE CHILDREN IN OUR COMMUNITY TO STEP UP AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO BETTER THEIR FUTURES

Hi, I'm Rob Scheer, Founder of Comfort Cases. Did you know that on any given day, there are approximately 437,500 children in foster care in the United States? Most of them are removed from their homes with little more than the clothes on their backs. If they do have any personal belongings, they are given a trash bag to carry them with.

It's incredibly sad, but each of us CAN make a difference, even if you've never met or known a child in Foster Care. Your selflessness and you simply taking the time to consciously educate yourself about these troubling situations in our community make ALL of the difference to very real children in these situations. I know it would have made a difference for me.

Outside factors and limiting beliefs will try to convince you that your efforts or your participation in our Trash Bag Take Down Challenge won't make a real difference, but I assure you- it will. Push your limiting beliefs aside, the ones telling you, "I don't have enough time", or "I'm just one person- I can't make a big enough impact", or "I can't go out of my way and drop everything to participate...", or "Someone else will step up", or even "I don't have money...", and CHOOSE to be a part of the solution.

As a community member, we have the ability to change the futures of vulnerable children and create a force of positive change in their lives. If you're a parent, I'm sure there's NOTHING you wouldn't do to ensure your child is safe, healthy, happy, and comfortable. But unfortunately, many Foster Care children in the System don't have someone like you cheering them on, providing for them, comforting them, and ensuring they have a fun childhood. Many are left wondering where their next shower or hot meal will come from.

I remember carrying a trash bag as I entered Foster Care and feeling worthless, like nobody cared about me. Like my future was gone. I remember worrying at night where my next meal was coming from, how I'd go to school and hope nobody smelled me because I couldn't shower for days. It felt so terrible and degrading. And because of that experience, I never want another child to feel that way. Nobody deserves to feel that way, especially young children or teenagers who have no real say in what happens in their daily lives and can't control the situations around them.

You have a real chance to change the world for a child who needs our help, but it requires you to consciously decide to be a part of the solution. Join our 30-Day DMV Trash Bag Take Down Challenge and together, we'll create the kind of beginning that every child in our local DMV Foster System deserves!
